As with magazines, there really aren't any books devoted solely to electric violin. We're forced to turn once again to the variety of standard sources, from which we can glean that occasional useful tidbit...

Here's a site with a whole collection of fiddle book links: http://www.internetland.net/~bshull/NAFA/mod.html

Violins and violin making

An Encyclopedia of the Violin by Alberto Bachmann - About as complete a reference to traditional violins as I've seen. Includes sections on violin origins, manufacture, technique, literature, and famous performers. Copyright 1966, 1990. Published by DaCapo Press.

Violin players

Stephane Grappelli by Raymond Horricks - I have this on order at Tower. Will fill you in when it arrives. Copyright 1985. Published by Da Capo Press.

Jazz Violin by Matt Glaser - Also on order at Tower. Copyright 1981. Published by Music Sales Corporation.

Great Masters of the Violin by Boris Schwarz - A general survey of great classical players from the early days of the viol (Corelli, Vivaldi, etc.) to current players (Perlman, Oistrakh, etc.). Copyright 1983. Published by Simon and Schuster.

Avant-garde music, improvisation, or generally weird yet interesting (as opposed to weird and boring) musical subjects

Improvisation - Its Nature and Practice in Music by Derek Bailey - Very interesting book on improvisation. Draws interesting connections between baroque organ (some of which was actually designed to be improvised), eastern (particularly Indian) traditions of improvisation, and current trends in jazz and rock. Copyright 1992. Published by Da Capo Press.

Improvising Jazz by Jerry Coker - Just got this, haven't read it yet. I suppose there are quite a number of books on jazz theory available (I'll have to go look at the UW's library and bookstore), but I haven't seen that many available at the bookstore. As I find out about more I'll begin weeding out the less useful ones from this list. Copyright 1964. Published by Simon and Schuster.

Improvising Violin by Julie Lyonn Lieberman - Just found out about Julie via the net, and haven't had a chance to order her book yet. Probably the only one in existence specifically devoted to violin improvisation. Preface by Darol Anger. You can order it via her web site. Copyright 1964. Published by Huiksi Music.

World Music - The Rough Guide, Broughton, Ellingham, Muddyman, and Trillo, editors - Great introductory reference for world music. Covers all major styles from around the world, and includes selected discographies and recommendations for listening. Copyright 1994. Published by The Penguin Group.

Sound Designs - A Handbook of Musical Instrument Building by Reinhold Banek and Jon Scoville - The only book I've seen thus far on amateur instrument building, this volume concentrates on using modern materials and techniques to create playable, good-sounding instruments. It does not claim to be a reference to traditional instrument-making techniques, which is probably all the better, since many of those traditions can only be effectively passed down orally and by demonstration. Most of the instruments shown are percussion, although there are a few number of wind instruments as well. Copyright 1995. Published by the Ten Speed Press.

Music recording, electronics, or the music business

Modern Recording Techniques, Fourth Edition by Huber and Runstein - The best introduction I've seen to recording and signal processing. If you know nothing about recording, mixing, or electronic effects, this is the book for you. If you know tons about those subjects, you'll still find this book valuable. 496 pages filled with solid, useful info. Copyright 1995. Published by SAMS Publishing.

Making the Ultimate Demo Michael Molenda, editor - From the writers at Electronic Musician magazine, this is a decent introduction to the basic production and recording issues you'll face when trying to make a demo recording. Copyright 1993. Published by Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation.

How to Make & Sell Your Own Recording, Revised Fourth Edition Diane Sward Rapaport - A good companion to Making the Ultimate Demo, this volume covers more of the business aspects to marketing a demo or finished recording. Copyright 1992. Published by Jerome Headlands Press/Prentice-Hall.
