I found this CD just by random luck at a local record store. Imagine my delight when I found it was some of the best world music I've bought in a long time! A trio, Davka is Daniel Hoffman on violin, Moses Sedler on cello, and Adam Levenson on doubek, frame drum, and zarb. They describe their music as "music from the Jewish soul inspired by Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Indian, and Classical styles." Davka is evidently Yiddish for "In spite of or contrary to what's expected." Appropriate, I should think, as their music takes what my ear calls traditional "gypsy" music, blends in a variety of other influences, and presents it with a passion and precision that's particularly enjoyable.
