Non-classical violin styles
Mark Chung's JazzStrings
http://shoko.calarts.edu/~chung/JazzViolin.html
This is a site devoted exclusively to jazz violinists. It has discographies and brief biographical info for many of them, and has some folks I've never heard of (and will now have to investigate). Growing rapidly in volume of information, this one's well worth your time.
FiddleChicks
http://www.fiddlechicks.com
This is a site devoted exclusively to non-classical violinists of the female persuasion. Very nice index with lots of good links and info.
MusicExplorium
http://www.musicexplorium.com
The only store I know of that carries several kinds of electric violins.
The Electronic Violin Project
http://crca-www.ucsd.edu/bobw/violin.html
This is a site devoted to the work of János Négyesy, and others who work with him. Although I've not heard his work, the text lends the impression of academic avant-garde, as opposed to popular avant-garde (the distinction, what little there is, being that the former is aesthetically more concerned with philosophy and the latter more concerned with emotion.)
Julie Lyonn Lieberman
http://members.aol.com/julielyonn
Julie Lyonn Lieberman is a player and teacher in New York, with several books available on jazz violin styles and improvisation.
The Fiddle Page
http://www.cs.brown.edu/people/gwk/fiddles/Fiddle.html
Well, ok it ain't avant-garde. But fiddling is so tied into many of the styles you see in avant-garde playing, it certainly deserves some investigation.

Violin Making by Hans Johannsson

Nicely designed site that presents the basics of violin making with pictures, sound, and even MPEG video (now if only I had a way to play MPEG video...).
Second Sight - Andrew Kirk, violin maker
http://emporium.turnpike.net/A/AAllen/violin.html
An interesting site if you want the basics of traditional violinmaking.
Roberto Regazzi, violin maker
http://muspe1/cirfid.unibo.it/violin/homepage.htm
Another site dedicated to traditional violinmaking. Broader range of content than Andrew Kirk's, but the design's not quite as elegant.

Lark In the Morning
http://www.mhs.mendocino.k12.ca.us/MenComNet/Business/Retail/larknet/larkhp.html
These folks are the best place I know of to get world music instruments. Need a rebec? They've got 'em. Turkish saz? They have cura and baglama, plus an electric version. Frame drums? All kinds. They originally seem to have been mainly concerned with Celtic instruments, but now stock just about everything. And I do mean everything... Their web catalog is well worth checking out even if you aren't a buyer, because they have sound clips for many of the instruments, some of which are very hard to find elsewhere.
