February 2001:
After, what...two years? I finally have the time and energy to work on the site again. I've added a bunch of new players and makers, and will be over the coming months writing articles on MIDI and the basics of purchasing an electric violin.
November 1999:
Digitalrain.net URL is now inactive, with only a redirect to the Lightbubble address. Please change your bookmarks to point to http://www.lightbubble.com/bowed.
May 1999:
Life intervened and I had to take a break from the site. Back to work on it now, though:
- New design with persistent left navigation bar.
- New Players page with all players sortable by name or genre. Plus icons to denote multiple genres.
- New Makers page with several new makers, plus new layout to make it load faster and to link directly to makers web pages (when available).
I'm now working on consolidating some of the other areas of the site, redesigning the layout, and adding several new essays on various subjects. And lots of new players to add, too. Adding them as time permits.
The move to the lightbubble.com domain should happen shortly as well.
March 1998:
I'm moving the whole site to a new domain (www.lightbubble.com) and will be redesigning and updating it. Look for a fresh new site this summer. (Removed Classifieds and BBS pages as I haven't had time to keep them up to date.)
August 1997:
- Busy month for The Guarneri Underground. Haven't had much time for site work.
- Player pages for Evan Price, David Balakrishnan, Daniel Seidenberg.
- Update to TISQ and Darol Anger pages.
July 1997:
- Added Hugh Marsh to Players
- Added Alfredo de la Fe to Players
- Made page in Makers section for NS Design.
- Updated "Pickup Basics" in Makers section.
- Added photo and info for Autolycus pickup.
- Updated Will Taylor's discography
June 1997:
- Added Makers:Pickups section
- Added sound clips for Dider Lockwood, Eddie South, Noel Pointer, Enzo Rao, and Matt Glaser.
- Mailed out Bowed Electricity Newsletter v2.1 (6/21/97). Submit your name to the mailing list but didn't get a copy? Send me email and I'll get you fixed up. Newsletters will also be archived on the News/BBS page.
- Added photos of 1976 Fender electric to Vintage:Fender page.
- Added new photos of Barrett's Luma violin to Makers:Barrett page.
- Updated Ithaca page.
- Added new maker: Valley Arts Violin.
- General tweaking of design: new navigation bar, started putting pages into tables for white space, heading text color, etc.
- Added Heys, Scrimshaw, and R & Bell to Makers section.
- Added Bradley Slate and Vassar Clements to Players section.
- Added picture of 4 new violins, cello to Jordan page.
- Updated Vector and Starfish makers pages.
- Made The Waiting List to give you some idea of what's ahead in terms of people and makers. It's even longer than I had thought, and it's making my brain hurt. Needless to say I'm going to have to re-think the structure of the Players page....
- Added pictures for: Howard Armstrong, Clarence Brown, Michael Doucet, Mark Feldman, Johnny Frigo, Matt Glaser, Leroy Jenkins, Eddie Jobson, Didier Lockwood, Juan Reynoso, String Trio of New York, Eddie South, Boyd Tinsley, Michal Urbaniak, and Joe Venuti.
- New navigation bar.
- Picture of Alvarez violin.
- New/expanded discographies for Richard Greene, Steve Kindler, Regina Carter, Mark Feldman, Leroy Jenkins, Noel Pointer, Michal Urbaniak, Johnny Frigo, Nigel Kennedy, Didier Lockwood, Claude Williams, Papa John Creach, and Eileen Ivers.
- New player: Will Taylor.
- Have finished combing AltaVista for links, and have now added a Web/Email section for all players. Have added several dozen links, covering almost all major players.
- In the process of reformatting pages. Will hopefully get navigation fully done in the next day or two (so you can get to Vintage, Classifieds, and News/BBS from any page).
June 7, 1997:
House cleaning has begun. I'm now updating links, adding new players, new makers, and most importantly, have added a Classifieds section! Have an electric violin to sell, or looking for a used one to buy? Try the classifieds page. I've also added a News/BBS page on which you'll find the latest releases, plus discussions by, well, you!
I'm right in the middle of the update, and will post details as to what's changed when I'm done. I'll also send out mail to the mailing list to let everyone know what's up.

May 7, 1997:
New World, the first album from The Guarneri Underground (my collaboration with Jeff Sick) is finally done! Check it out!.
This means that finally, after way way way too long, I'll finally be able to update the site (and boy does it need it!). Many new artists to add, and new violin makers too. If you want to be notified when the update is complete, join the mailing list (above). And to those of you who've been sending me new info and updates: thanks for the info, and for your patience during the past several months of downtime (well, for me anyway, not necessarily the site....).
September 26, 1996:
QuickTime VR has arrived! Check out my Jensen violin in glorious 3-D! (The animation here is just an animated .GIF. The QTVR version is much larger and smoother.)
July 1, 1996:
- Vintage section continues to fill out.
- Players section gets new pages for Jon Rose, Davka, Mark Feldman, Eyvind Kang, Nigel Kennedy, Claude Williams, and Hugo Martinez.

September 1, 1995:
- Bowed Electricity first uploaded to the net. Work continues over the next several months getting basic site together.
The Waiting List
Players and Makers I know about, but for whom I've not had time to make a page. Note that not everyone listed here will necessarily get a page, but I'm at least planning on investigating them. And no, position in the list doesn't mean anything. That's just the order in which I typed it....
