Schussler picAlthough I've played classical violin since I was five, it was 1993 before I actually tried something different for more than five minutes. I bought an electric guitar, some effects, and then a pickup for my acoustic violin. A guitarist friend of mine suggested we jam a bit, and since neither of us had ever heard "thrash" violin, we went for it with lots of distortion and reverb.

And it was a kick in the pants. Like most non-traditional violinists I listen to Jean-Luc Ponty and Stephane Grappelli, but I also listen to Orbital, Tool, the Kronos Quartet, L. Subramaniam, and Sinead O'Connor. And it's integrating some of those latter influences that has taken most of my focus in recent projects. I don't know where I'll end up, but I'm having a hell of a good time getting there....

The project that's currently taking the majority of my time is a collaboration with Jeff Sick under the moniker The Guarneri Underground. Our two studio albums, "New World" and "Captive," combine many of my world music influences with Jeff's rock background. And our live album, "Bootleg," shows off some of the pyrotechnics we display in our live show. Check them out!

I also have a solo album out called "Minor Arcana," which you can explore on my solo page: www.lightbubble.com/schuss.
