Commonly referred to simply as Shankar. Probably the most successful Indian violinist to marry traditional Indian styles with western jazz and fusion. Although his album with Frank Zappa was interesting, his work on ECM is my favorite. M.R.C.S. and Song For Everyone are particularly good (and if you like Jan Garbarek's work on M.R.C.S., check out the album he did with Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, "Ragas and Sagas." Very cool stuff, although more Indian-sounding and less jazz than M.R.C.S.). You'll also find him on records from the 70's with John McLaughlin in the group Shakti.
As a fan of Indian classical music, I like all Shankar's work. But if you're in it for the jazz, avoid albums like "Pancha Nadai Pallavi" or "Soul Searcher," which are heavily based on traditional Indian classical styles. On the other hand, I'd encourage you to check those classical albums out even if you are only into jazz, 'cause they're way cool....
Here are a couple samples from his album, "Song for Everyone" with Jan Garbarek on soprano saxaphone:
