Born November 27, 1904. Died April 25, 1962.
I've only heard two recordings of South, one when he was playing with Django Reinhardt, and one by himself. Djangologie (both sets) have South on them, although he takes second billing to Stephane Grappelli. At that point in their careers, I don't know that I would have put Grappelli above South. Certainly Grappelli is now the better known, but then he's still alive, too. And it could be argued that ultimately Grappelli has turned out to be a better and more versatile player. But South was one of the first to make a violin swing, and is undeniably one of the great early jazz violinists.
