Subramaniam picProbably my favorite Indian violinist. Impeccable technique and beautiful phrasing lend his classical works an intensity that bears repeated listening. I must admit to being less enthusiastic about his fusion works, at least the ones I've heard. They're interesting, but not as groundbreaking as those of his brother, Shankar. As I understand it, however, he's done quite a bit of fusion work with other folks, so I may have to go poking around some more before I say much more about it.

Interesting side note, L. Subramaniam is actually Dr. L. Subramaniam, and it's not a music degree, either. He's a certified physician. Pretty amazing to have achived that level of accomplishment in two entirely unrelated fields. (Or perhaps they're not so unrelated?)

I'd particularly recommend his duo with Ustad Allah Rakah (Zakir Hussain's father), or either of his solo albums on Water Lily Acoustics--Kalyani or Sarasvati.
