This section will rely heavily on input from you. I know of only two sources for instruction in avant-garde/jazz violin technique, so I'm hoping you can point me towards people or organizations in your area that are providing instruction in new playing styles.
Private Instruction
Jeffrey Sick
Jeff teaches a variety of styles, including jazz, swing, country, and rock. He lives in the Seattle area, and is available for private instruction.

Group Instruction
The Stanford Jazz Workshop
This workshop is a week's instruction on string improvisation, lead by the members of the Turtle Island String Quartet. Held on the Stanford campus, the workshop usually takes place in the first week of August for adults. A young musicians program is also available during the last week of July for students aged 12 - 17.
Cost is approximately $500 for commuter students, $600-$750 for students requiring housing.

Jazz in July
This is a two week program in jazz improvisation (this year it's July 8-19), led by prominent jazz musicians from a number of disciplines. Most importantly for string players, John Blake and the Turtle Island String Quartet are leading workshops (at least in the 1996 session). Other staff include Billy Taylor, Yusef Lateef, Sheila Jordan, and Ted Dunbar.
There is only one session, open to all players over the age of 16 via audition. Jazz in July is sponsored in conjunction with the Music department of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and offers university credit through their Continuing Education department.
Cost is approximately $540 for the two week program, $375 for a one week program with TISQ. This does not include room and board, or the $45 registration fee if your application is accepted. Applications for the 1996 program are due by March 22, 1996.

The Mark O'Connor Fiddle Camp
I just found out about this via an ad in Strings magazine. It's a 6 day session (there's a summer session June 9th - 14th, and a fall session September 22nd - 26th this year) held just outside of Nashville, designed for all levels of fiddle players. It's not just fiddling, though, as some of the instructors include Darol Anger (modern jazz), Matt Glaser (jazz), Natalie MacMaster (Celtic, Cape Breton), as well as O'Connor himself.
I don't yet have information on cost, but for more information you can contact:
